After Sept. 11, I donated to the established and well known charities. Afterward, I didn’t feel like I had accomplished anything, not nearly in the scope I did when I’ve given blood donations in the past. Then I heard, of the $500 million collected by the redcross earmarked for 9-11 Victim relief, only $100 million was allocated and the rest was banked (the use of which couldn’t be governed).
I’m not donating to any of the established charities this time around. I’m taking a page out of Samuel L. Jackson’s book… Instead of giving a sum of money to one charity, I’m going to diversify and give more direct support, cutting out the middle person. Instead of having my $100 or whatever be filtered through corporate bureaucracy, and reaching the intended recipient as only like $10… I’m going to donate bags full of clothes I no longer wear (and were considering throwing away or giving to another group). Now, since this tragedy… I’m going to give those clothes to the Hurricane Katrina victims who have been put up in shelters here in Philadelphia, PA. I’m also going to buy prepaid cellphones and include them with little gift bags via a consorted effort with my job which includes gift certificates for shops and eateries in the area and basic supplies.
Like Kanye West said, “…America’s set up to help the poor, the Black people, the less well off – slow as possible.” So, to those who criticize the Gov’t. I say, circumvent them and give direct assistance if you’re capable.
Otherwise, I’m working still as a Standardized Patient. I’ve got to put a lot of money in getting my car fixed. I’m planning more fun get togethers with Philly Deviants & just enjoying life.
