IconX Released to ObjectDesktop Subscribers

Stardock, the software company that has brought us revolutionary desktop utilities such as WindowBlinds, ObjectDock and IconPackager has released an updated version of DesktopX and along with it, a really neat tool called IconX. If you’re like me, you don’t use DesktopX, which IconX was once bundled with - but with this new release of DesktopX 2.2, IconX has also been released, separately!

Unfortunately for us, Stardock has not released IconX per-se as a stand-alone application, yet, but has made the beta available to those who own their ObjectDesktop suite of desktop enhancement utilities.

The best way I can describe IconX is that it’s a program that adds “ObjectDock” styled effects to your desktop icons. If you don’t know what ObjectDock is, it’s a glorified taskbar/systray with an endless array of icon effects from transparency, animation and skinnability. A better likeness to use would be with DesktopFX, but not as many people use that, I would assume. With IconX, I noticed the most interesting feature to be its highlighting of icons when you hover over them. I wouldn’t classify it as a productivity tool rather a tool to add some much needed LIFE to the WindowsXP operating system

I’ve taken some screenshots of the tool so you can see what I’m talking about. It’s very lowkey and the average user probably won’t even notice it’s running:
